Specification for Small Vessels and Heat Exchangers with Limited Design Conditions [Complete Revision]
standard by Process Industry Practices, 02/01/2012

Category:

Description

This Practice provides requirements for the construction of a small pressure vessel or heat exchanger, both with limited design conditions. This Practice describes the general requirements for the design, materials, fabrication, examination, inspection, testing, certification and pressure relief of:

a. Three classes of small pressure vessels

b. Heat exchangers with the limited design conditions shown in Table 1a or 1b of this Practice

This Practice is applicable to:

a. The standard, pre-designed pressure vessels and heat exchangers supplied as part of pre-engineered package units (e.g., refrigeration and air-compressor systems)

b. “Off-the-shelf” vessels and exchangers

c. Vessels (e.g., filters) or exchangers built from the Manufacturer's standard parts

For purposes of this Practice, it is understood that the term “vessel” includes heat exchangers.

This Practice is not intended for the following:

a. Vessel in “Lethal Service” (as defined in Section VIII, Division 1 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Code))

b. Vessels for which design wall thickness is governed by loadings from wind pressure or earthquake forces

c. Custom shell-and-tube heat exchangers outside the scope of Table 1a or 1b.

Description

This Practice describes the general materials, design, fabrication, examination, inspection, testing, and documentation requirements for pressure vessels with limited design conditions. This Practice designates minimum general requirements for the construction of three classes of small pressure vessels (including heat exchangers) with the limited design conditions shown in Table 1. See Section 5.3 for material of construction limitations. This Practice is intended to apply to the Manufacturer?s standard, pre-designed pressure vessels and heat exchangers supplied as part of pre-engineered package units (e.g., refrigeration and air-compressor systems), “off-the-shelf” items and vessels (e.g., filters) built from the Manufacturer's standard parts. Use of this Practice for custom-designed vessels is limited to applications that have been reviewed and approved in writing by the Purchaser. Special requirements are covered in the Vessel Specifications (see Section 3 for definition).
