Coatings Used in Conjunction with Cathodic Protection
Report / Survey by National Association of Corrosion Engineers, 07/01/2000

Category:

Description

The use of protective coatings in conjunction with cathodicprotection has an extensive record of proven performancein the protection of structures including undergroundpipelines, ships, underground storage tanks, pilings, interiors of aboveground storage tanks, and tank bottoms.

The use of both a protective coating and a cathodicprotection system presents unique design, installation, andmaintenance considerations.

This technical committee report provides users of protectivecoatings and cathodic protection with information onthe strengths and weaknesses of each protective systemand explains how a greater level of corrosion protection canbe achieved on buried or immersed sub-strates if bothsystems are used together. This reportdoes not claim that one protective system is superior, butinstead focuses on the interdependent relationship betweencoatings and cathodic protection. The inform-ationpresented in this report is relevant to both interior andexterior coatings used in all industries, but specificapplications are also noted.
